The Yaeyama Islands, tucked into the southernmost reaches of Okinawa, are a haven for biodiversity and cultural heritage.

At the heart of this archipelago lie two large islands, Ishigaki, and nearby Iriomote,

a place so unique it was granted UNESCO World Natural Heritage designation for its pristine ecosystems and extraordinary wildlife.

These islands exemplify the Okinawan ethos of inochi-du-takara—“life is a treasure”—

where nature, culture, and daily life intertwine seamlessly.

Visitors to this lush region can immerse themselves in landscapes untouched by time,

connect deeply with the environment, and uncover a sense of ikigai, or purpose, in harmony with nature.

This four-day itinerary explores the treasures of these islands, from kayaking through mangroves to experiencing traditional culture, spotting rare wildlife, and stargazing under one of the world's clearest night skies.

Day 1: Journey to Iriomote and Yubu Island

Begin your adventure with a flight to Ishigaki Island, followed by a high-speed ferry ride to Iriomote, Okinawa’s largest and wildest island.

IOften referred to as the "Galapagos of the East," Iriomote is a sanctuary for rare species like the Iriomote wildcat and hosts dense jungles, mangrove forests, and coral-lined shores. Your first stop is nearby Yubu Island , a tranquil haven where the entirety of the island is considered a botanical garden. Travel the 500-metre distance to the island in an oxen-drawn cart, crossing shallow waters as your guide serenades you with traditional Okinawan folk songs. Once on Yubu Island, stroll through gardens blooming with tropical plants, including hibiscus, bougainvillea, and vibrant orchids.

As evening draws close return to Iriomote, and prepare for an excellent Italian meal at a well-known local restaurant. As darkness descends, you can experience a night jungle tour that unveils the island’s nocturnal world. Keep an eye out for glowing fireflies, rare birds, and other creatures of the night. Later, look skyward in awe —Iriomote is a recognized International Dark Sky Park, and offers unspoiled views of constellations and the Milky Way.

The sound of the cascading falls grows louder as you approach, culminating in the breath-taking sight of water spilling down sheer cliffs into a serene pool. Wash off your sweat with a refreshing swim in the cool waterfall pool.

Take a break to enjoy the scenery before heading to another jungle trail. Along the way, your guide will point out unique plants and their uses in traditional medicine,

as well as the critical role the jungle plays in preserving the island’s delicate ecosystem.

After a day of hiking, enjoy a traditional dinner of local cuisine, including Iriomote's famed wild boar stew and fresh seafood, prepared with ingredients sourced sustainably from the island.

Day 3: Kayaking Through Mangroves and Island Life by Water
